Journal #6-CST/IST

1. What CST and IST grade would you allocate yourself? Justify your response.
I would give myself a low-A or a high-B for the IST component of this project because I think I would have done exceptional in the hardware competency test, and edited the final movie well considering it was my first time using Final Cut Pro. For the CST component I would allocate myself high-C, or a low-B, because our group havn’t included that much CST content into the project.

2. What could you do tonight to improve your grade?
I could add bookmarks to my “Diigo” account to get a few more marks into the IST component, because it is a requirement in the rubric to get an A. However, for CST I’m not all that sure how to increase the grade I am about to receive.

3. What grade do you think your team will give you for teamwork? Why?
I think my group might give me a B for teamwork because I have done great work but, maybe I could have been more helpful. It always pays off when you’re helping others, and I believe that this would have been a great time to do so.

4. Thinking about your presentation on Monday, what do you need to do to score an “A” grade? (hint: Look at the presentation skills). What could you do before Monday, to ensure you receive an “A”?
To get an A, in presentation, I believe I should talk well and confidently about our clip. My voice should have good projection, I should maintain eye contact, and know what I’m talking about. In order to ensure I receive an A, I can rehearse a speech during the weekends so I know what to talk about when the time comes.

1. What influences your values about issues relating to your life?
Things that influence my values which relate to my life would be my parents/family, because they are the people that I am around the most; the community I live in, considering that what happens around us would have been adopted by me while I was young; and finally my school, because we learnt how to behave appropriately around others, especially the public, and how to effectively live our lives in the footsteps of Jesus.

2. Do you ever compare images/values presented by the media to those of the Bible? If so, Why? If not, Why not?
I usually don’t compare images/values to the Bible, but when I do, it’s usually because I wonder why the media would do such things to negative actions, but, however, for positives I still wonder how they can relate to what they are talking about.

3. Has this project challenged you to examine your values? Why/Why not?
Yes this project has challenged me to examine my values because often when we see or hear something wrong we think about how we may be like that or better. My values towards the issue, binge drinking in which we are currently critiquing, is that I know that it is wrong and still wonder how people get enjoyment out of it, considering that the morning after, they usually become a recipient of a irritating hangover. After learning the science behind drinking and how alcohol affects the body, it seems ludicrous that these people want to continue their eccentric behaviour. I often think that, when I do something that may not seem like something i should do, I really shouldn’t have don’t what I did and ponder over what the reason was that kind of action to be provoked.

1. How do you feel the media portrays social justice issue?
The media portrays social justice issues by thinking of them as any other issues or news products. All the media are really looking for is good ratings and to become more popular with the public so that they earn more money.

2. Has it been difficult to find articles on social justice issues? Why/Why not?
It has been quite a challenge to find social justice issue articles because it isn’t very often that these types of issues “enter the limelight” which makes the seeking of such articles harder.

3. Do you think that the media operates from a moral framework? Give evidence by using your research.
I highly doubt that the media operate through a moral framework considering that all they want is good news to publish, take for example the “Brangelina’s (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) twins” article. A news company paid $US20 million just for the pictures of the twins, consolidating my point of media not working with a proper moral framework because if they did they would respect the privacy of the couple and their new born, as well as, the other children.

1. Describe two things that you have learnt during this lesson.
Two things which I have learnt during this lesson would be how light refracts when it passes through any transparent object at an angle; and that there are many different instruments or tools which use lenses and mirrors to show different things.

2. Outline three things you know about optical technologies.
Three things I know about optical technologies are: they use lenses and mirrors, they can bend light, they can be used in a variety of jobs or circumstances.

3. Identify one aspect of the project you feel uncomfortable about and really need to know. Explain the best way this could be resolved.
I feel uncomfortable about designing the prototype of our optical instrument because I don’t think I’m that good with designing software, however, this can be resolved if I complete a few tutorials on what I need to do in the program.

Open and read the “How to Critique” document in the resources menu.

1. Describe what is a critique.
A critique involves identifying critical parts to say about an article and being reluctant to describe rather than analyse.

2. Outline the four stages in a critique.
The four stages in a critique are: introduction, summary, analysis or critical commentary, and evaluation or conclusion.

3. Can a critique be positive? Discuss.
Critiques can be positive because they are only descriptions of an article which can be heard as a positive comment.

4. Critique the accuracy of the videos.
First video: Obviously it’s a fake, heavily fabricated as China have not spent 1000 years preparing for the Olympics; the athletes aren’t going to be captured by hidden holes in the ground etc.
Second Video:I doubt that this video is real as when would you ever see a donkey on a basketball court being ridden on and it might be a coincidence but the reporter of this news’ name was Reggie “Greengrass”, not sure whether his surname has anything to do with something.

1. Name the issue.
The Aborigines getting more ownership of this land.

2. Describe one media account of this issue.
“Aborigines Granted Sea Rights by High Courts”. I found this report which basically discusses how the Aborigines came into contact with more ownership of this land which they once fully owned.

3.  Where did you get this media account from?
I obtained this media account from the following website: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24100687-421,00.html.

4. Is this media account correct/reliable? Why?
I believe that this media account is reliable as provides evidence and concrete support for the facts and detail it delivers and this is often the key to correct reports; and also that the website news.com is a very famous website for Australians who want their news off the Internet.

5. Where else might you be able to find more information about this issue?
For more information about this or any other issue relating to the Aborigines, you may be able to visit Wikipedia, Britannica or any other news website.

1. Describe two things that you have learnt during this lesson.
Two things I learnt during the lesson were that the media could be very deceptive of how they convey news to the public and what lengths and techniques some could use to make the public fall for them; and that the reporters and journalists probably practice how to cover up what they report effectively so that the public believe them as many heavily rely on the news to keep up in life.

2. Identify two areas you want to concentrate on during this project that you think need a greater improvement from the last project.
Two areas which I think I need to focus on during this project would be my time management and fulfilling my roles to the best of my ability. Time management has often effected my work in the past and I really want to improve it as it can help me with other projects as well. I also think that if I fulfill my role to the best of my ability, the rest of my group might follow and it would keep everyone on track to successfully completing the project given.

3. Discuss two ways in which your group could resolve any disputes during this process.
Two ways in which our group could resolve disputes during this process would be that if someone had a problem with something they could talk to the group about it; and by not being disrupted by other groups we can avoid such issues or disputes happening in the first place.

Journal #1-CST/IST

The clip we watched was about a program running on the ABC called “Mediawatch” which is very similar to the ever controversial program “The Chasers War On Everything” running on the same network and “Good News Week”. The common link between all of these shows is that they satirise the news which has been reported in some way. It talked about the controversies relating to the World Youth Day celebrations, which already took place, as well as the organizers of the whole event. The host pointed out various flaws in the news reports about World Youth Day and the sex allogations made by the public against the church which occured more than 10 years ago in some cases and the host laughs at the fact that they bring it out right before the celebration starts.

1. How well did your group work?
I think our group worked quite well especially when the pressure was on although, we could have avoided the pressure if we were more organized and used more communication.

2. Would you work in the same group of students again? Why
I would work in the same group again because i know they can work well if they knew exactly what to do and we could be more organized.

3. How much effort did you put into this project? What could you have done better?

I believe that I put a lot of effort into this project as I used many websites to get info and then i had to read through it all to put it into my own words. As I’m not that fluent in Photoshop I think I did pretty well when making my original image.
If I effectively organized my time more I wouldn’t have been under too much pressure to finish this project.

4. Do you think your final wikispace was your best work? Why?
I don’t think our final wikispace was our best work as we could have done better with our information and captions. We could have added more information into our wikispace about the different art periods.

5. What did you think of the project when you received it? Why
I felt quite disappointed that I would be doing art again as I didn’t really like it last year but I felt like I should do pretty good because I feel like I’m pretty good at researching.

6. What do you think of the project now you have completed it? Why?
I think that the project was alright but I’m not really into learning through visual formats. This would be why I don’t like art. I still think that there should be more journals integrated into the project instead of the Individual Tasks/Group Tasks.

7. What did you like in the project? Why?
The part I liked about the project was the part where we got to use computers to design the images as I am still intrigued by the power of computers and what they can do to images/videos etc.

8. What did you not like in the project? Why?
I didn’t like having all the Individual/Group Tasks along with the project as it required us to push forward many of our deadlines which ended up in us having to work really hard closer to the due date.

9. How can the teachers make your next project better
In my opinion, I would like the teachers to add more journals much like the first 2 projects but without all the individual tasks/group tasks.
